Call of the Sea is a collaborative mixed media sculpture created with my studio partner, ceramicist Charlene Rooney. Charlene has sculpted the seal from fine porcelain, inspired by the seals we regularly see just outside our studio. He is meticulously hand-painted to capture the unique character and gentle presence of these beautiful creatures.

The seal is mounted on a piece of native burr elm, hand-finished by local woodturner Mark Hanvey, and embellished with delicate flameworked glass bubbles.

Behind the seal sits a traditionally painted fused glass roundel, acting as a portal to the sea. The roundel is decorated with a sun and moon, symbolising the eternal pull of the tides. At the base are pebbles with their distinctive rings reminiscent of those found along our local shore. The border draws inspiration from the tentacles of sea anemones that thrive in the rock pools nearby.

Together, these elements celebrate the rhythm of the coastline — the meeting of land, sea, and sky — and the enduring call of the sea.

  • Overall height 25.5cm

  • Base 20cm wide x 15.5cm deep

  • Seal 22cm in length

  • Glass roundel 20.5cm diameter
